Successful criminal background checks
require attention to the record-keeping process in relevant
jurisdictions. Because criminal records are not public in
all states or because their use might be restricted, such
research also requires knowledge of federal privacy and
state open access laws. This section of the CIR teaching Web
reviews the criminal record-keeping process and explains the
differences between national, statewide and county criminal
checks.
